Have you taken action? #NARCallforAction

Did you know that one inch of water can cause more than $25,000 in structural damage?

For property owners across North Carolina, the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) is vital in protecting their properties from this type of loss due to flooding from natural disasters and other weather events. More than 500 communities from Murphy to Manteo rely on the NFIP to provide required insurance.

But because of Congressional inaction, the NFIP is at risk of ending when the current reauthorization expires on July 31.

TAKE ACTION TODAY AND PROTECT THIS VALUABLE PROGRAM

Over the past month, more than 3,100 NC REALTORS have contacted their Members of Congress to ask that they support the reauthorization of the NFIP. We are still 1,800 members away from hitting our 20% goal!

What happens if the NFIP is not reauthorized?
First and foremost, properties across North Carolina will be at significant risk the next time flooding occurs. This could be from the next hurricane which reaches our shores or the next major rain event.

Secondly, thousands of transactions will be stalled or prevented because of the lack of this coverage. During the last time the program was allowed to expire, more than 40,000 transactions were hindered. The private insurance market has been generally unable to provide this type of coverage due to the significant risk and cost of coverage.

These are just the short-term issues. It is unclear what a long-term expiration or the complete elimination of the program could mean for communities across the country.
