Politics (and cat videos)

Following their session earlier this month to address Hurricane Florence recovery, legislators returned Monday to provide further funding to support relief and rebuilding efforts in affected areas. Based on current damage estimates and needs coordinated by the Governor’s office, they unanimously approved an $850 million spending plan. The plan includes $450 million in immediate relief and federal matching monies, as well as $400 million which will be allocated over the coming months to address specific needs.

Legislators did discuss the potential need for a third relief package which may be considered during their post-election session in November.

  • Florence is estimated to have caused $13 billion in damage across North Carolina. By comparison, Hurricane Matthew in 2016 caused roughly $5 billion in damage.
  • Agriculture alone represents upwards of $1.1 billion in damage to crops, livestock, and farms.
  • NC REALTORS® continues to update our Hurricane Florence resource page as more programs come online.
