What’s in this edition?

And, you will want to read all the way to the bottom of this email to get a glimpse of some of the progress at the Heck-Andrews House…

What happens when 5,000 REALTORS® take action on an issue?

People listen!

Thank you to the almost 5,000 NC REALTORS® who took action and told Commissioner Causey to oppose the proposed homeowners’ insurance rate hike. Combined with the more than 1,400 homeowners who participated in the NC Homeowners Alliance, that is close to 6,500 letters that were sent communicating our opposition.

On Tuesday, 2019 NC REALTORS® Legislative Chair Wendy Harris was in Raleigh to provide the Association’s comments on the ratemaking proposal during the public comment session. Check out a video of her comments.

She was also joined by representatives from the Outer Banks Association.

The next steps in this process are that the Department of Insurance will review the comments submitted (more than 9,000 total), as well as complete their own analysis of the proposed rates. From there, the Commissioner may choose to reach a settlement with the Rate Bureau or move forward with a hearing (currently scheduled for Sept. 4). Stay tuned for updates!

Introducing the 2019-2020 NC REALTORS® Legislative Agenda

What are the important priorities for our industry this biennium?

With the General Assembly’s 2019-2020 session getting underway, we are happy to unveil the NC REALTORS® Legislative Agenda for this biennium! Included in this document are 5 key legislative priorities that we want to accomplish over the next 2 years.

They each represent an important issue for our members and our industry and include the following items:

  • Private Road Maintenance Agreements
  • Health Insurance for Independent Contractors
  • Short-Term Rental of Residential Property
  • Historic Preservation Tax Credits
  • Economic Development Funding

But don’t worry, these aren’t the only issues that your Government Affairs team is working on. As we have in previous sessions, we will continue to update you on important pieces of legislation which impact your business, your clients, and your industry through weekly updates in the REALTOR® Advocate.

The 2019-2020 Legislative Agenda will provide the foundation for this year’s Legislative Day Talking Points which will be released soon! Check out Section 4 for more information on this year’s Legislative Meetings and Legislative Day.

Happening on Jones Street

What’s on the General Assembly’s mind this week?

After a brief break, we are happy for the return of the “Happening on Jones Street” section of this newsletter. This week saw the filing of multiple important pieces of legislation, as well as a committee hearing on an NC REALTORS® Legislative Priority.

On Thursday, the Senate Commerce Committee heard Senate Bill 86 “Small Business Healthcare Act”. This legislation was filed last week by Senators Dan Bishop, Joyce Krawiec, and Chuck Edwards. If passed, it would open the opportunity for the creation of Association Health Plans, providing a needed option for independent contractors, like REALTORS®, to receive health insurance through plans supported by associations.

This is an important first step in opening up this important option for our members! NC REALTORS® Legislative Chair Wendy Harris was in Raleigh to speak to the Committee on behalf of the association. The bill now moves on to the Senate Health Care Committee.
