Happening on Jones Street

What’s on the General Assembly’s mind this week?

Though the legislature has been moving at a slow pace with no resolution in sight for the budget impasse, that hasn’t meant that nothing has been going on. After unanimously passing House Bill 620 “Street Database/Manual/Public Record Except.”, we were ecstatic to receive notice that Governor Cooper had signed the bill into law! This is an awesome accomplishment for our top NC REALTORS® Legislative Priority. In the Jones Street Update, we will give you more insight on what you will see in the future.

Also, on July 15, we were fortunate to have the opportunity to provide comments before the House Rules Committee regarding short-term rental legislation. NC REALTORS® comments were presented by Matt Allen from the Land of the Sky Association of REALTORS® due to the significant impact that these regulations are having on the Asheville area. Though the legislation was ultimately not voted on to allow for more stakeholder conversation, we were proud to have the opportunity to present our perspective on this important issue.

Government Affairs team well-represented at annual gathering

July 15-17 saw Government Affairs Directors from across the country descend on Cincinnati, Ohio for the annual NAR Government Affairs Directors Institute. Over these three days, attendees receive targeted professional development on important areas to improve their work in REALTOR® Party programs and in member advocacy efforts.

North Carolina was one of the largest contingents at the conference with both the NC REALTORS® Government Affairs team, as well as the other local government affairs directors from across the state.

NC REALTORS® was also very well represented on the Institute’s panels. Director of Regulatory Affairs and External Communications Seth Palmer participated in the Short-Term Rental Workgroup’s Panel Discussion. Chief Lobbyist Cady Thomas (2018 GAD Advisory Group Chair) and Director of Local Government Affairs Nicole Arnold were joined by Todd Brown, Deputy Operations Chief with the North Carolina Division of Emergency Management for a discussion of NC REALTORS®’ disaster response efforts and how others can provide the same level of response to natural disasters.

Lobbyist at your door

With summer membership meeting season kicking off, NC REALTORS® is reopening the Lobbyist at your Door program. This program allows you the opportunity to invite a member of the NC REALTORS® Government Affairs team to your next local association or brokerage meeting. Attendees will get the inside scoop on what is going on in Raleigh and how the decisions of elected officials impact your business, your clients, and your industry.
