Happening on Jones Street - SPECIAL CALL FOR ACTION EDITION

Have you taken action?

As we told you last week, Senate Bill 86 “Small Business Health Care Act” passed the House of Representatives by a strong bipartisan vote, 82-32. This week (Tuesday), the bill was given final approval in the Senate by a vote of 32-9, again receiving support from members of both parties. In total, Senate Bill 86 received 114 out of the possible 170 votes in the General Assembly. The bill was presented to the Governor yesterday (August 15) and is awaiting his action.

The Governor has 10 days to act on the legislation or it will become law. That means a decision must be reached by 1 week from Sunday, August 25.

On Tuesday evening, we launched an all member Call for Action asking members to contact Governor Cooper and tell him to sign Senate Bill 86.

As of the time of publication, MORE THAN 5,000 EMAILS have already been sent to the Governor. Thank you to everyone who has responded. There is still time for you to TAKE ACTION and we need him to hear from every REALTOR® across the state.

We have launched a comprehensive information platform which includes digital advertisements and other content we are using to ask for the Governor’s support of this bill. Visit www.AHPforNC.com. And make sure to follow NC REALTORS® on Facebook and Twitter.

Congressional Recess Roadshow

Congressional Leaders, Local Connections

Throughout the next couple of weeks, NC REALTORS® and the NC Homeowners Alliance will be hosting events with members of the North Carolina Congressional delegation during the summer Congressional recess. These events are coordinated by each Representative’s Federal Political Coordinator.

On August 15, the Winston-Salem Regional Association of REALTORS® were honored to host Congresswoman Virginia Foxx for a legislative update on REALTOR® issues. Foxx covered a variety of issues including flood insurance, association healthcare plans, and GSE reform.

When asked about Association Healthcare Plans, Congresswoman Foxx stated, “It is the most sensible healthcare reform we could make in this country!”

Special thanks to Bill Aceto from the High Country Association of REALTORS® who serves as Foxx’s Federal Political Coordinator.

FUN FACT ABOUT YOURSELF I was drafted into the US Army while attending the University of Michigan Detroit branch night school in Detroit. At that time I was not taking a full load in school (12 hours was the cut off). After basic training at Fort Knox, KY and advanced Infantry training at Ft. Polk, La, I was sent to Washington DC as a member of the 3rd Infantry Regiment, “The Old Guard”. I was recruited to the 3rd Platoon Company E – Honor Guard Platoon. Shortly thereafter, I volunteered to become a Guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. After several months of training, all done after normal duty hours, I was transferred to the Tomb Guard detail. I became a Sentinel of the Tomb Guards and served as a sentinel for 7 months. I was promoted to Relief Commander of the 3rd Relief for several weeks then transferred to the 2nd relief as Relief Commander where I served an additional 10 months. Serving in this capacity was a great personal honor. I dedicated my efforts to my Father, a veteran of WWl. (ONE) It pleased him very much.

Event Highlight: Unlocking the Power of NC eClosing

Learn more about upcoming advocacy-focused events across the state

With technology becoming a more involved part of the real estate business, there are numerous new products and processes which have come on line. One of those is in the area of electronic closings. The North Carolina Secretary of State has identified this as an area that they would like to work more on to ensure that as the concept rolls out, it is done in a responsible manner.

In furtherance of their work, they are facilitating a conference in Raleigh on August 22 discussing the process, opportunities, and challenges facing eClosings in our state.
