Have you taken action?

For the past 10 days, we have been engaged in our largest advocacy campaign in more than a decade. Why? Because quality, affordable health insurance is one of the top issues for YOU!

Since the launch of this campaign, more than 7,100 emails have been sent to Governor Cooper asking him to support Association Health Plans and sign Senate Bill 86. THERE IS STILL TIME TO HAVE YOUR VOICE HEARD! TAKE ACTION TODAY and make sure that Governor Cooper knows how important this issue is for you and your industry!

In addition to our Call for Action, we have also launched social media and video content asking for the Governor’s support of the bill. You can check all of that out by visiting the NC REALTORS® Facebook and Twitter profiles.

Also, in partnership with 14 other stakeholders, we published full page ads in the Raleigh News & Observer and Charlotte Observer last week.

We have launched a comprehensive information platform which includes digital advertisements and other content we are using to ask for the Governor’s support of this bill. Visit And make sure to follow NC REALTORS® on Facebook and Twitter.

In the next section, we are going to take a quick look at some of the media attention this campaign has received.

Association Health Plans in the News

Since the passage of Senate Bill 86 in the General Assembly last week, multiple media outlets have reported on the legislation and the impact that Association Health Plans would have on people across the state. In many of them, NC REALTORS® staff and work is quoted or referenced. Here are just a few of those.

Regulatory Review

Taking a closer look at regulations which impact your business

This week in Regulatory Review we take a look at some new rules on the federal level dealing with FHA condo loans.

Last week, NAR notified members that after more than a decade of work, the federal Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) is finalizing new rules for Federal Housing Administration (FHA) condominium loan policies. According to NAR, these changes should lead to “thousands of new homeownership opportunities and help alleviate affordability restraints impacting markets across the country.”

The new rules extend certifications from two years to three, allow for single-unit mortgage approvals, provide more flexibility with owner/occupancy ratios, and increase the allowable number of FHA loans in a single project. The rules were published in the Federal Register and will go into effect in mid-October.

FAVORITE QUOTE OR SOMETHING THAT INSPIRES YOU “At the banquet table of nature, there are no reserved seats. You get what you can take, and you keep what you can hold. If you can't take anything, you won't get anything, and if you can't hold anything, you won't keep anything. And you can't take anything without organization.”

WHY DID YOU WANT TO JOIN THE NC REALTORS® TEAM? I wanted to join NC REALTORS® because I believed that it would give me a level of engagement with some or all levels of state government at some point. Regulation is, after all, central to government operations. There is little point in going against those processes, but there is a lot of point in understanding them. I felt that NC REALTORS® would allow me to get the communication right and provide the best chance of a positive outcome.
FUN FACT ABOUT YOURSELF I can name all 100 US Senators for each state

Did you see what that city proposed?

From time to time the NC REALTORS® Local Government Affairs team sees some actions at the local level that make them scratch their heads. Whether it be an off-the-wall ordinance, a fun meme in a government presentation, or something that we aren’t even thinking about, we will share those with you as part of our effort to keep you informed and engaged.

This week we actually aren’t talking about a crazy action by a local government, but rather one of the crazy requests that they receive from residents.

Can pigs be emotional support animals? Or pets? Those are the questions that have come up in a planning board discussion in the Triad. Apparently, a resident was seeking a zoning amendment to allow her to keep the pigs (along with what was reported to be a significant amount of trash) in her yard which is inside town limits. Her motion was denied citing incongruence with the town’s comprehensive plan, not to mention the consistent violation of other ordinances. For now, the pigs will have to relocate and the trash will have to be cleaned up, hopefully resolving this porcine property rights problem.
