Happening on Jones Street - SPECIAL CALL FOR ACTION EDITION

WE DID IT!

On Sunday afternoon, we were given the great news that Governor Cooper was allowing Senate Bill 86, the Small Business Health Care Act or Association Health Plan Bill, to become law without his signature.

This means the entire REALTOR® community - along with countless other independent contractors and small business owners and their employees across North Carolina - will benefit from having quality, affordable group health insurance plan options. That includes many of your fellow REALTORS® who currently cannot afford insurance, others who are underinsured, and many more who are financially strapped because of the high cost of insurance.

Nothing is more important to us than your health and well-being. That’s why this bill has been the top legislative priority for 2019.

We have so many people to thank, as well as a lot of information about what comes next and all of the various advocacy efforts that went into this success. Make sure to check out Sections 2 and 3 for more information.

What does the AHP decision mean for you?

As soon as we were notified that the Governor was going to allow Senate Bill 86 to become law, our focus shifted to understanding what this decision meant for our members and our ability to offer these plans. We have fielded emails from across the state asking this and many other questions, and we wanted to make sure that we clearly articulate the next steps. NC REALTORS® CEO, Andrea Bushnell recorded a video which provides information about the how things will move forward.

Association Health Plan Campaign By the Numbers

Because of the importance of this issue to our members, NC REALTORS® launched the largest advocacy campaign in more than a decade focused on supporting this legislation and encouraging the Governor to sign it into law. While a discussion of these efforts would be voluminous, we can break some of them down into the numbers which relate to them.

135,000 North Carolinians reached by full-page newspaper advertisements in the Raleigh News & Observer and Charlotte Observe

In this new section we will feature profiles of each of the members of the NC REALTORS® Government Affairs team. We will be going in order from our newest employees to those who have been on the team for many years. This week, you get the chance to meet one of our Shared Government Affairs Directors, Stephen Bradford.

FAVORITE QUOTE OR SOMETHING THAT INSPIRES YOU Nature truly inspires me. Whether I am 120 feet under water on a dive in the Caribbean or on a hike atop a mountain ridge, it never fails to inspire and awe.
FAVORITE BOOK “Heart of a Soldier” by James B. Stewart
WHY DID YOU WANT TO JOIN THE NC REALTORS® TEAM? I was looking for a change of pace and had a fondness for North Carolina from times spent in the mountains of Avery County. Coming from a real estate family and having a keen interest in politics and policy, the Government Affairs position with NC REALTORS® seemed like a logical fit.
FUN FACT ABOUT YOURSELF Though I don’t speak it now, my first words were in Cantonese, not English

Congressional Recess Roadshow: Rep. Ted Budd

Congressional Leaders, Local Connections

Throughout the next couple of weeks, NC REALTORS® and the NC Homeowners Alliance will be hosting events with members of the North Carolina Congressional delegation during the summer Congressional recess. These events are coordinated by each Representative’s Federal Political Coordinator.

The Winston-Salem, Greensboro, and High Point Associations were honored to host Congressman Ted Budd for a legislative update and town hall on REALTOR® issues on August 28 in Kernersville. Budd covered a variety of issues in detail, including a great summary of GSE reform, wire fraud, flood insurance, and association healthcare plans. The Congressman took questions from the floor for the majority of the meeting, providing a great opportunity for REALTORS® to engage with their representative.

Special thanks to Brooke Cashion from the Winston-Salem Regional Association of REALTORS® who serves as Budd’s Federal Political Coordinator.
