Happening on Jones Street

Though still not at its normal pace of business, the General Assembly still managed to have some fireworks this week. As we discussed in last week’s edition, legislators were ordered by a three-judge panel to redraw a significant number (77 of 170) of the state’s legislative district maps following a ruling that they were politically gerrymandered. In an effort to compile non-partisan maps, House leaders decided to use a randomized system to choose from a list of 1,000 possible map options. And what did they use to make their selections? Why a lottery ball machine, fresh off the set of the North Carolina Education Lottery’s set.

At the time of publication, committees in both chambers were still working on their respective maps. Legislation is expected to be introduced formally unveiling the proposals in the next couple of days, with votes occurring next week to remain in compliance with the court order.

Also, on Wednesday the House took a controversial vote to override the Governor’s veto of the 2019 budget proposal. Learn more about what occurred and the controversy which has ensued in this article from WRAL.

We expect a lot of action in the coming days so make sure you check out next week’s Advocate for more information.

NC REALTORS® PAC Fundraising Update—Xchange ’19 Events

Join us for NC REALTORS® PAC’s DJ Bingo Night at XCHANGE ‘19!

September 16, 2019
Grand Ballroom, Pinehurst Resort

We’re switching this up this year. Get ready for DJ Bingo – a fun, interactive game for all ages that will test your musical knowledge. We’ll play a song clip, and you’ll have a limited time to figure out the song title and if it’s a match on your bingo card. We suggest you play as a part of a team because most likely no one will know all the song titles. There is no entry fee to play and everyone receives a complimentary drink on us!

While you are there you can participate in our raffle benefitting NC REALTORS® PAC! There will be dozens of great items up for grabs that night, and raffle tickets are only $5 each! Tickets can be purchased at any time during convention from an NC REALTORS® PAC trustee or at the NC REALTORS® PAC booth.

Congressional Recess Roadshow: Rep. David price

Congressional Leaders, Local Connections

Throughout the next couple of weeks, NC REALTORS® and the NC Homeowners Alliance will be hosting events with members of the North Carolina Congressional delegation during the summer Congressional recess. These events are coordinated by each Representative’s Federal Political Coordinator.

As Congress returns to session, we were fortunate to cap off the Congressional Recess Roadshow with an event with long-time Congressman David Price.

Representative David Price joined REALTORS® on Monday in Research Triangle to discuss a variety of topics important to our industry. The town hall, led by his Federal Political Coordinator Tom Heffner, focused on NFIP renewal, GSE reform, and the recent $76 million federal grant for Raleigh-Charlotte Intercity Rail Service. The Congressman thanked the members for their questions and expressed his appreciation for REALTORS® providing subject matter expertise to staff.

Don’t worry, we will be back with more events when Congress goes on recess again. We have heard great feedback from all of the events so far and look forward to having more. A special thank you to all of the Representatives who participated in this round of events, their Federal Political Coordinators, the local associations in their district, the North Carolina Homeowners Alliance, and the NC REALTORS® staff who worked to put these events on (Katharine Wendt, Troi Hicks, and Nick Scarci). And a very special thank you to all of you who were able to attend the events in your area.
