GAD Takeover of the Advocate
September 24, 2021
Once a month NCR Government Affairs Directors (GADs) will do a GAD Takeover of the Advocate! This monthly feature will be solely focused on local policy, events and news. It will take a closer look at Local Association advocacy efforts and community engagement. Each GAD will provide a unique, personalized peek into their areas. The GAD Takeover offers a break from state legislative news and will take you on an advocacy trip around North Carolina, from the mountains to the coast and all areas in-between.
This month’s update is a little different as it’s falling on the heels of the 2021 State of Real Estate Conference. We understand that with our members have demanding schedules so not everyone was able to attend the conference but you can still experience it!
This year’s 2021 State of Real Estate conference added an exciting new session, a local component was added to the agenda. The GADs led locally themed sessions where participants were able to join regional groups to discuss housing opportunities and reveal survey results from local planners on how to increase opportunities in their areas.
The GADs ended the day with a locally themed version of the sessions planned for day two. They explored tourism, commercial real estate and economic development efforts. Government Affairs Director Michael Cooper provided a thoughtful look at how the pandemic has impacted rural areas. While Porter Graham gave an update on short term rentals and the impact of regulations on this source of income for many North Carolinians living in tourist areas.
Guest speaker Heath Dillard, Director of Insights - Charlotte Regional Visitor’s Authority, discussed tourism at the local level and how it has been impacted by the pandemic. Dalton Clark, Regional GAD moderated the panel, and GADs Genise Smith-Watkins and Mike Butrum discussed tourism in their areas. Peter Frandano: CRCBR Board member, CCIM provided an insightful look at commercial real estate.
The entire GAD session was moderated by Troi Bachmann, Director of Field Advocacy and Nick Scarci, Political Operations Director. Click here to check out the session.
